A recent study done by the National Kidney Foundation revealed that 1 in every 5 women will experience a UTI in their lifetime. This is because we have a smaller urethra, and UTI causing bacteria are able to invade our bladders much easier, and once inside the bacteria begin to multiply and cause infections to develop. Here are some of the most common causes of UTI, and a few tricks to keep yourself safe...
1. Feminine product freshness.
The longer you leave your tampons, or pads on, the more time bacteria has to grow on them, so it's important to frequently change them in order to prevent infections from occurring. Underwear choice is another important decision that can help protect you from UTIs. Classic cotton underwear helps prevent excess amounts of moisture, which reduces the risk of bacteria. Additionally, you should avoid wearing thongs, or thin g-strings because they have a tendency to chafe.
2. Changing birth control.
If you recently changed your method of birth control, you might be experiencing a shift in your hormone levels, and the normal bacteria in your vagina may become unbalanced, which will put you at a greater risk of a UTI. Frequent use of spermicides and diaphragms are also common activities that put you at at increased odds of a UTI.
3. Drink more water.
Dehydration is one of the most common causes for UTIs during the scorching summer months. It is recommended that we drink at least half of our body weight in ounces of water, but a large number of Americans don't even drink half that amount. A physician at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine found that staying well hydrated throughout the day actually will help to flush out the UTI causing bacteria out of your system.
