If you find it alarming that the FDA allows food with those little flaws to be packaged for sale, check out the rest of the list to find out some of the other impurities that could be lying in some of your favorite foods.
Objectionable materials
The first of many disturbing things we came across was foreign matter, or "objectionable" materials as defined by the FDA. These foreign objects could be anything from sticks, cigarette butts, and even burlap bags.
Although these materials seem like they could cause you harm, the FDA allows objectionable materials whole black pepper, mace, and sesame seeds because they only consider them to be aesthetic defects.
Rat hair
Rat hair along with a variety of other rodent hair can be found in a number of commonly used spices including paprika, allspice, marjoram, curry powder, and cinnamon.
Nutmeg and allspice are the lowest on the list with only 1 hair allowed for every 10 grams, paprika is a little higher with up 11 hairs found in every 25 grams, then marjoram and ground sage top the list with 8 and 9 rodent hairs for every 10 grams.
Additionally, boxed and prepackaged foods such as chocolate, corn meal, peanut butter, macaroni noodles, apple butter, and coca powered are also allowed to contain a certain amount of rodent hair.
Maggots
If you're a lover of tomatoes, mushrooms, fruit juice, and cherries, its possible you've eaten a few maggots in your lifetime. These are the foods that are most likely to contain maggots because the FDA believes they are just another aesthetic defect.
Shockingly, there can be as many as 20 maggots in every 100 grams of mushrooms, or slightly less if they are over 2 millimeters long.
