A "toxin" is an incredibly broad term. Ask anyone what they are and you'll probably get a larger range of answers. But generally speaking, toxins are things in our bodies that shouldn't be there. These can include chemicals from smoking cigarettes or inhaling smog, and even pesticides that find their way onto our food and into our mouths.

Here's the bummer: the only thing that flushes toxins from your body is, well, your body! So are all the detox teas and water infusions useless? Not necessarily.

Your filtering organs, like your liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system, require certain things in order to function, like water and nutrients. Because we eat such a terrible diet these days, it can be difficult for your body to get what it needs to actually do its job.

So should you detox? Heck yeah! It certainly can't hurt, right? The toxins can though. The range of symptoms from toxic buildup in the body include blurred vision, weight gain, inflammation, headaches, fatigue, and even more serious disorders.

So how do we get rid of them? Well, step 1 is to simply not consume them in the first place. Here's a pro tip:

1. Avoid products that contain chemicals.

Sorry friends, but you're going to have to read the labels. I know it's annoying, but you have to. Know what each chemical is in your shampoo, your toothpaste, your shaving cream; each of these things find ways to get into our bodies and start messing things up for you.

2. Eat whole foods.

Remember: your BODY is what's responsible for flushing toxins, not miracle teas or pills. So give your body what it needs to succeed: whole foods. Caveman didn't eat hot pockets; we didn't evolve to eat these super processed, unhealthy foods. Stick as close to you can to whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and meats. If you eat processed stuff, stay close to whole grains.
