Study: If You Shop At The Dollar Store, You’d Better Stop
With the unfortunate reality that is our economy, some families are faced with little options with their money and what that means for sustainable living for them. Which ultimately leads families to dollar stores everywhere in the hopes of affordable merchandise and food they can purchase for survival.
However, according to a report that was collaborated by HealthyStuff and the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, showed that some certain Dollar store products contained toxic chemicals. The report being labeled as “A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Discount Retailers are Falling Behind on Safer Chemicals” states the testing results that was conducted on 164 dollar store products that included school supplies, jewelry, toys, and various other household items, that about 81% of the products contained at least one toxic chemical above levels that trigger concern.
The campaign was compelled to send a letter to the CEO’s of the four largest Dollar store company chains, which includes Dollar general, Dollar tree, Family Dollar, and 99 Cents Only that they should cease all sales of products found to contain toxic chemicals to communities of color as well as low-income families that already suffer from polluted areas. Instead, they urge them to adopt new policies that are aimed to protect both the business and the customers.
You are probably wondering what kind of chemicals were found in the products at these stores. The report included the following chemicals that triggered so much concern: toxic metals such as lead, polyvinyl chloride plastic, which is known to be linked to asthma and other lung effects, and pthalates, which are known to be linked to reduced fertility, cancer, learning disabilities, diabetes, birth defects, and many other health issues.
It is important that we abolish all of the toxic products that dollar stores are willing to dish out in order to have a safer and healthier way of living.
