You probably wash your hair at least once a day, right? Well here’s something that may surprise you: it’s distinctly possible you’re doing it wrong. Yeah, you can wash your hair wrong.

Using incorrect techniques can seriously damage your hair, making it more likely to split and fall out. Here’s what you need to do to protect your hair during washing.

1. Rinse first.

Don’t ever apply shampoo or conditioner to dry hair. Make sure your hair gets a very thorough rinse before you apply soap. Hot water opens up the cuticle, which helps remove dirt and trapped product in your hair. It also loosens oils in the scalp.

2. Condition first if your hair is longer.

Don’t use shampoo first if you have long, danglin’ locks. Running a slight amount of conditioner through your hair after rinsing helps keep the ends healthy. It will fill any holes in the cuticle with moisture, thus boosting shine.

3. Lather shampoo only at the scalp.

You only need to shampoo your scalp, not all of your hair. The hair closest to the scalp is younger and oilier, which requires more cleaning.

4. Don’t scrub the bejesus out of your hair.

Be gentle on your scalp and hair. You can damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to split ends and tons of frizz. Wash your hair like you’d want to wash your delicates. Delicately.

5. Don’t rinse and repeat.

There’s no need for it, and you could actually damage your hair with too much washing.

6. Finish with cold water if you can.

Cold water helps shut the cuticle, sealing in moisture and enabling greater shine.
