This Is What Happened When I Did A 10-Day Sugar Detox

Here’s a fact that not too many people truly accept: sugar is addictive. Know what else isn’t too sweet? Diabetes, cancer, depression, acne, and heart disease. All of these things are caused by or made worse by sugar. That’s no fun!

Knowing this, I decided it was time to kick sugar out of my life for good, but first, I wanted to do a sugar detox. I cut all the sugar out cold turkey. This is what happened during the first 10 days.

1. I lost 4 pounds.

Some of it may have been water weight, but I’m also sure some of it was fat. And it makes sense. Sugar causes you to gain lots of weight. When you start cutting out the sweets, you decrease your calorie count and begin to lose weight.

2. My blood pressure normalized.

My blood pressure was always a little bit on the high side. After I cut out sugar, my blood pressure returned to normal levels.

3. My head wasn’t so foggy.

In fact, my mind was rather clear. My brain felt less bogged down. There’s a reason for that too: eating too much sugar impairs cognitive function and can reduce proteins necessary for good memory and responsiveness. “A high intake of sugar is assocaited with metabolic syndrome, a cluster a conditions associated not just with decreased cognitive function, but possibly even with changes to brain structure,” Long Gillespie says.

4. My outlook was a lot less bleak.

One study found that people who consume more than four servings of soda a day were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who drank non-sweetened beverages, like water, tea, and coffee. Similarly, I felt less despair. My moods were a little bit less swinging.

5. My skin seemed to tighten up.

Eating too much sugar can cause your skin to age prematurely. When you stop eating sugar, the damage done to your skin begins to slowly undo itself. I don’t have bad acne, but any blemishes I did have faded away.

In the long term, my risk of fatty liver disease, diabetes, some types of cancer, dementia, depression, and Alzheimer’s are lower for not eating sugar. If you decide to detox sugar, be sure you get lots of exercise, drink plenty of water (your body will need to flush out a lot of nasty toxins) and eat good, healthy foods.
