Breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer among women all over the world. In both women and men, it accounts for about 18% of deaths worldwide.
The rate of breast cancer in women is higher in more developed countries. Scientists believe the reason for this is due to diet and the simple fact that women in developed countries live longer. In the United States, approximately 40,000 deaths per year are attributed to breast cancer.
The chance of developing breast cancer increases with any of the following risk factors: old age, previous types of lumps in the breast, genetics, obesity, exposure to estrogen, alcohol consumption, exposure to radiation, dense breast tissue and a previous bout with cancer of any kind.
The cure rate for breast cancer is high if caught early. That's why it's so important to routinely check for lumps and any other changes in the breast and to have yearly mammograms.
But, mammograms and self-exams are sometimes not enough. Sometimes mammograms don't "see" the tumors, and some tumors that are deep within the tissue cannot be felt manually until they are very large.
There are other signs of breast cancer that, unfortunately, most women ignore. So, be sure to also look for these 5 warning signs of breast cancer:
Women who have a lot of moles have a 13% higher rate of breast cancer than those who do not have a lot of moles. Changes in moles are usually considered a sign of skin cancer, but they can also be an early warning sign of breast cancer. If you notice changes in any of your moles, seek medical attention immediately!
Cancer can cause an imbalance of hormones in the body that can lead to fatigue. Of course, fatigue can occur on a daily basis just due to our hectic lifestyles. But, if you find yourself feeling tired for no reason and not enough sleep in the world will help, make an appointment with your doctor.
In approximately 70% of patients with breast cancer, the cancer will spread to the lungs causing persistent cough and hoarseness. If you develop a cough that lasts longer than a few days, see your doctor.
Again, because of hormonal changes, people with breast cancer will notice changes in urination and bowel movements. Leaking of urine when coughing, sneezing or laughing (also known as stress incontinence) is common among breast cancer patients.
Due to pressure on the spine and ribs from tumors, people with breast cancer often feel upper back pain. If you are experiencing upper back pain that cannot be explained, make an appointment with your doctor.
The above 5 signs should be watched for, but you should also watch for any changes in the breast itself such as: warmth and swelling, unusual discharge from the nipple, puckering of the nipple or skin, skin rash, and changes in the size and shape of the breast.
These are usually the first things you would notice if there is a tumor present. Always seek medical advice if you have any concerns regarding the above symptoms or any changes in your breast.
