Mayra Rosales has a checkered past. She was dubbed the half-ton killer, due to her weight, which was 1,000 pounds, and the accusation that she killed her nephew by rolling over onto him. But her name has been cleared; she clearly killed no one. And with that new lease on life, she took action.
"I was alive, but not living a life," she said after taking on her weight problem.
In 2008, she was literally a prisoner, but a prisoner to her weight. She weighed more than 1,000 pounds and could do little other than lay there.
"I was dying. I don't know if you had seen pictures before you could see it in my face. I had given up in life," Rosales said. "I was alive but not living a life."
But today, things are radically different. Rosales has lost 800 pounds through surgery and good diet practices, and she's got another 30 to go. What's 30 when you already have 800 under your belt?
Along with her new body, she has a new perspective on life.
"Food to me is I have to eat to live. Before it was living to eat, and now you know, it's just something normal," Rosales said.
It took a lot to lose 800 pounds, as you can imagine. One of the most taxing parts of the process was the 11 surgeries necessary to get the weight loss going. But once it started, there was no stopping it.
Her first 100 pounds came off in the first 10 days. That's an extreme amount of weight loss that can't be replicated in normal-sized people.
She weighs 200 pounds now and wants to lose another 30. She's close to being the ideal weight for someone her height, and she couldn't be happier. Her health has improved along with her appearance.
